Guidelines for Assessment of Professionalism and Communication Skills
The following criteria should be used to judge whether or not a student/resident is at expected level of competence:
MS2s and MS3s
Demonstrates at least three of the four professionalism behaviors
Demonstrates at least three of the six communication skills
MS4s
Demonstrates at least three of the four professionalism behaviors
Demonstrates at least four of the six communication skills
Interns
Demonstrates at least three of the four professional behaviors
Demonstrates at least five of the six communication skills
In assigning the designation of above expected level of competence use the following criteria:
MS2s and MS3s
Demonstrates all professional behaviors
Demonstrates at least four of the six communication skills
MS4s
Demonstrates all professional behaviors
Demonstrates at least five of the six communication skills
Interns
Demonstrates all professional behaviors and communication skills
Guidelines for Assessment of History and Physical Examination
In order to be judged as at expected level of competence, a student/resident may not have more than one of the following bulleted items in the history category
and/or the physical examination category (i.e. one bulleted item may appear in the history and a second bulleted item in the physical):
MS2s
2 not addressed
2 major omissions
1 not addressed and 1 major
4 minor omissions
MS3s
1 not addressed and 1 minor omission
1 major and 1 minor omission
4 minor omissions
MS4s
4 minor omissions
Interns
3 minor omissions
In order to be judged as above expected level of competence, a student/resident may not have more than one of the following bulleted items in the history category and the physical examination category (i.e. bulleted items represent total for combined history and physical):
MS2s
2 not addressed
2 major omissions
1 not addressed and 1 major
4 minor omissions
MS3s
1 not addressed and 1 minor omission
1 major and 1 minor omission
4 minor omissions
MS4s
4 minor omissions
Interns
